First Summer Headbang

From http://banchoryheadbangers.blogspot.com/

We met on the High St and, after a quick pint at the Douglas, Andy drove us out to Dave's for our planned early start to the first ever summer headbang. Malcolm had done the shopping and immediately took charge of Dave's BBQ - must be the American influence.

We decided to take the team photo beforehand for a change:

It required a little editing as the original version had a little too much grass in it - most appropriate we all thought.

Some initial technical difficulties were eventually resolved by a couple of phone calls to Banchory Techies (http://www.banchorytechies.co.uk/) helpline. First up as usual was the obituaries. It had only been a couple of months since the last headbang so there were only 4 significant passings to commemorate.

The most missed was voted to be Lena Horne and a 1943 clip of her singing Stormy Weather was shown. Malcolm McLaren was next and Alex Chilton and Lesley Duncan finished level last.

Four old Eddie Cochran clips from the 50's were shown in memory of the 50th anniversary of his death at the end of his UK tour. Most popular was the classic Summertime Blues, with C'mon Everybody next, followed by Twenty Flight Rock then Somethin' Else.

Appropriately, in view of the hot weather, a short Surfin' USA feature was next up. There was a clear favourite here with Dick Dale ("King of the Surf Guitar") coming well ahead playing his classic Misirlou, as popularised in the opening scenes of Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.

The Beach Boys were next, followed by the Chantays, the Ventures and, trailing in last, the rather puppet-like performance by Jan and Dean of their Little Old Lady from Pasadena hit.

Voting over, it was time to settle down to some favourite selections, ranging from a lip-curling clip of Cliff's Move It from 1958 to some of the more esoteric and interesting requests, interspersed with some classic clips never before viewed at any headbang. We never quite made it through the entire selection chosen for the evening, so the 17 clips not shown will be carried forward to the next headbang - unfortunately including a couple of Malcolm's requests - Maximo Park and Pink Martini.

Another good night - and thanks to Dave for his hospitality again - and to our American trained BBQ chef, Malcolm (speciality beefburgers - there's a surprise).
