BBC Four has been running old series of Top of the Pops - in its traditional Thursday night slot - and it's 1976 that's on now. I switched on the other night and who should I see, but an old school pal of mine, Sandy Newman.
Who he, you ask? Well, he joined Marmalade as lead singer in 1973 after both Dean Ford and Junior Campbell left the group. Click on the blog and watch this video appearance - and try not to laugh:
Sandy's in the middle with the white top and 70's moustache and sideburns. He's still in the business and touring, but his appearance has changed a little over the years - check his web site - http://www.sandy-newman.com/index.html
By a bizarre coincidence, when we moved down to London in 1974, we bought a house in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire and got to know some of the neighbours. Margaret and Joe Postlethwaite were great fun and we enjoyed their company, and it turned out that Margaret was Sandy's elder sister!
Since we left the South East in 1979, we've only been back to Broxbourne once - 10 or 15 years ago. We were just passing through and who should we bump into walking down the street, but Margaret again! We still exchange Xmas card messages.
So that's my mini claim to fame - and eerie coincidences.
