One thing we forgot last night was to take a team photo, so, for the record, in attendance were Dave, Colin, Gerry, Andy, Ian, Jeb and Dylan, plus me. Gary never quite made his expected late arrival - and thus missed some of his own personal requests, including a superb Morning Dew from Nazareth, and Uriah Heep's Wizard, which invoked the evening's first use of the ejector button - it didn't go down very well with the assembled throng.
The only other curtailed video clip was Caravan's 6 minute The Dog, The Dog, He's at it again, which was a special request from Jeb, but got the ejector button treatment half way through as the rest of the Headbangers stifled some late night yawns.
Here's the playing order and votes for the first part of the evening - the Obituaries - an amazing 14 in all since the last Headbang in March. We had a "guess the age" chat going on all evening. Colin won the star prize for incorrectly guessing that Andrew Gold's age was sixty-seven - this was immediately after we made a big point about Lonely Boy's opening line, which starts "he was born on a summer's day, 1951"! Colin subsequently defended his position by stating that he didn't realise it was autobiographical. This song, of course, could also have been absent Headbanger Malcolm's theme tune!
Clear winner, due to his high profile with The Boss and his performance in the video of Born to Run, was Clarence Clemons - no surprise there then, but some of the other votes look a little strange to me in the cold light of day. I'm not sure everyone had got the hang of the voting system at this stage - some of those cast looked to have been inverted - i.e. instead of giving 14 points to the "most missed" and downwards from there, some were giving full marks to artistes they had never previously heard of! No names, no pack drill.
Scores on right, with ages at death in parentheses:
- Clarence Clemons (69) 92
- Jet Harris (71) 77
- Pinetop Perkins (97) 75
- Poly Styrene (X-ray Spex) (53) 70
- Kathy Kirby (72) 67
- Gil Scott-Heron (62) 65
- Phoebe Snow (60) 63
- Gladys Horton (Marvelettes) (68) 60
- Andrew Gold (59) 58
- John Walker (67) 55
- Johnny Pearson (TotP) (85) 53
- Johnny Preston (71) 46
- Keith Fordyce (RSG) (82) 37
- Hume Paton (Poets) (66) 22
CK and I ruefully noted that 4 of the above list were younger than we are!
More to follow.
