The Day the Music Died Headbang votes (3)

From http://banchoryheadbangers.blogspot.com/

So to the last 2 sections - and time was running out - it was already about 11:30 pm and we had more than an hour to go, depending on use of yellow cards. It was now the Names section - first up was songs with Female names in the title. We had done this many years ago in the pre-video Headbang era, bu times have moved on and we now had both sound and vision. There are lots of songs with Female names in the title, but getting sufficient quality - and different names - in video format, was not quite so easy. I decided 10 was a good number for this - and every other - section, and I decided early on that it had to be 10 different names.

The winner was a recently discovered video clip that the cameraman had stashed in his loft for many years and he had only recently re-discovered the recording of David Bowie's Jean Genie. Here's the final pecking order:

1 David Bowie Jean Genie 80
2 Faces Cindy Incidentally 73
3 Elvis Costello & the Imposters Alison/Suspicion 66
4 Rab Noakes Absolutely Sweet Marie 64
5 Seth Lakeman Kitty Jay 62
6 Johnny Cash A boy named Sue 49
7 Sam Cooke & the Everly Brothers Lucille 33
8 Barry Ryan Eloise 30
9 Tony Joe White Polk Salad Annie 21
10 Dolly Parton Jolene 17

Dolly Parton getting last place was confirmation that the Headbangers don't seem to like Country Music. Billy Jo Spears had suffered a very similar fate in the Obituary section.

Male Names was the next - and last - section. The Stones' recording of Jumping Jack Flash took top honours - the face paint and lip gloss undoubtedly contributed to the slightly threatening atmosphere of the clip. Perennial favourite Nils Lofgren was in 2nd place with a live electric (original) version of Keith Don't Go. Here's the full list:

Rolling Stones Jumping Jack Flash 82
Nils Lofgren Keith Don't Go 73
Chuck Berry Johnny B. Goode 68
James Taylor Sweet Baby James 64
Special AKA Free Nelson Mandela 48
Art of Noise & Duane Eddy Peter Gunn 44
Coasters Charlie Brown 35
Kingsmen Louie Louie 32
Counting Crows Mr. Jones 31
Suede Metal Mickey 18

Stan, Stan, the taxi man had arrived by now and it was time to pack up and head home. 19 yellow cards had been used during the course of the evening. Ian, James and Jeb each had one yellow card left, and Dave had two. Gary obviously didn't use any of his and nor did I. It was the first time we'd tried this - on previous occasions, videos have been rejected by popular acclamation only. I would be interested to know whether this system worked and should be repeated or not?

Thanks must once again go to Dave for agreeing to host the event. We always leave there in a bit of a hurry and never think of helping Dave put his house back in order - a point to consider for the next time. Dave also supplied more than his fair share of beer on the night - otherwise we would have run out!

Likewise, thanks to Gerry (and Stan) for arranging to take us there and back - great service. Also to CK who again arranged for a fine selection of curries - let us know what the costs are please, Colin?

Just two matters left to deal with:

  1. Date of next headbang - midsummer again?
  2. Please vote for your top 3 tracks of the evening.
