With the exception of Malcolm, it was a full house for last night's headbang at Dave's. Even Gary managed to change his plans and fit in a brief visit before having to dash off to the airport to pick up visiting family. It was prudent therefore to take the team photo at the start of the evening, rather than the end:
Even one of the cats got in to the team photo! James Marshall (Hendrix?) was the only one suitably dressed for a real headbang, wearing a proper rock and roll t-shirt - most of the rest of us look a bit too business-like.
I had picked Dave up at the airport at 4:30 pm and we had headed out to his to set up all the gear - and put the heating on in his (unoccupied) house. The usual technical glitches were eventually overcome and we were able to head back to Banchory and join the rest of the gang in the Douglas for a swift beer or two before heading back out to Chapel House.
Yellow cards were issued (I meant to have you all posing, flashing them in the team photo, but forgot!) and we started the evening with a brief newsclip, describing the tragic events of 3rd February, 1959, and then played short clips of performances from Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens. Undoubtedly, Buddy created the greatest impact on music and voting would normally have been pretty unanimous in making him the "most missed", but, of the video clips that were shown, the Big Bopper's (Jiles Perry "J.P." Richardson) performance of Chantilly Lace was outstanding and he ended up winning the voting in this section by the narrow margin of 24 votes to 22, with Ritchie Valens bringing up the rear with 14 points.
There was a bit of a change in the planned batting order after Gary requested that, as he had to leave early, could we now play the songs that everyone had chosen as the ones they would want played at their own funeral? We started with Malcolm's choice - The Doors with The End. Good though it was, the Headbangers' patience ran out half way through the 12 minute song and yellow cards were flashed for the first time and we moved on to the next selections.
This section of 10 had started with "The End" and it finished with "The End" - the Beatles version this time. Lights on and a brief intermission for chat, voting and refills. The votes have been collated this morning and it was a tie at the top for the most popular between my choice of the animated version from the Beatles Rock Group game of The End, and Jeb's choice of Next by SAHB - both had 64 points. Here's the full list:
- 1 = Beatles - The End (IRS) - 64 votes
- 1 = SAHB - Next (JT) - 64
- 3 Don MacLean - American Pie (IPM) - 62
- 4 Sandy Denny (Fairport Convention) - Who knows where the time goes? (CK) - 53
- 5 Blind Faith - Presence of the Lord (SP) - 52
- 6 Tom Waits - Tom Traubert's Blues (GAG) - 49
- 7 Just Jack - The Day I Died (GM) - 49
- 8 Joe Walsh - Life's Been Good (AM) - 46
- 9 = Doors - The End (ML) - 28
- 9 = Pink Floyd - Careful With That Axe, Eugene (DMW) - 28
To be fair, the votes obviously reflected the quality of the actual clips that were viewed on the evening, rather than the suitability of the choices. Ian's choice of American Pie was very appropriate for this particular Headbang - it was exactly 40 years ago today that this song was number one in the charts. Another little known fact is that the full title of the Tom Waits' song has parentheses added to the end of it - but not "Waltzing Matilda" as everyone believes it was called, but "(Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen)".
The other voting in this section was to guess who chose which song. Obviously, I knew the answers and didn't take part, and it was pretty difficult for James to guess our choices - although he didn't even get his Dad's choice correct! Colin, Jeb, Steve and Gerry each got just 2 correct (including their own!), whilst Ian got 3 and Gary and Andy 4 each. Best by far, however, was Dave, who correctly guessed 7 of the 10 - well done!
It was at this point that Gary had to leave, so I'll end this particular blog posting now. Watch out for part 2 of the voting results shortly.
