Headbang Results (2) - 14th June, 2013

From http://banchoryheadbangers.blogspot.com/

The next part of the evening was a "Best of the Best". At the previous 8 Headbangs, we had voted for our favourite tracks of the evening. Together with 2 tracks that had been clear favourites in prior periods (pre-voting), this made up a nice round 10 of our favourite musical videos. Now it was time to determine which was our all-time favourite, by playing them all together in one section. It was a tough call, but this was the outcome of the Finzean jury, now augmented by the late arrival of Ian McRae, swelling voting numbers up to 9 in all:

1 SAHB Framed 24 June 2011 71
2 Faces Stay with me 08 October 2010 58
3 David Bowie Jean Genie 03 February 2012 55
4 Golden Earring Radar Love 01 March 2013 54
5 Sex Pistols God Save the Queen (77) 22 June 2012 54
6 Lynryd Skynryd Freebird Honorary 50
7 Train Ramble On 11 November 2011 43
8 Cream Sunshine of your love 26 October 2012 41
9 Talking Heads Psycho Killer 11 March 2011 38
10 Johnny Cash Hurt Honorary 31
Well, I guess somebody had to be bottom - pity poor Johnny C.

Alex Harvey's live performance of "Framed", filmed in Oslo in 1974 (not USA as I had always imagined) was a clear winner and it can be viewed again here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FG6aLs8zzrs

So now it was back to the Rock Champions League KO - Quarter Finals first, with the 4 heavyweight seeds now in play.

The first tie saw Led Zep pitted against the Beatles and it was a very tight affair, with both winning the away leg narrowly by 5 votes to 4, so it came down to a play-off, which was narrowly won by Messrs Page, Plant, Bonham & Jones.

The second tie pitted Cream against the seeded Rolling Stones, and this was no contest really, especially after the roll of the dice produced Gimme Shelter - Cream could find no answer to this.

The first leg of the Neil Young v. Bob Dylan tie was very close, but it was a 9-0 whitewash in the away leg in favour of the Canuck.

Elvis put up some resistance against Dr. Feelgood in the last tie, but, given that some of the King's videos were well over 50 years old, the superior quality of the more recent Feelgood recordings definitely had some effect on the votes cast.

So it was that we came to the Semi-Finals, which lined up as follows:
  • Led Zeppelin v. Rolling Stones
  • Neil Young v. Dr. Feelgood
The first tie was a real heavyweight slug-out, which needed another play-off to produce a result, but the last of the seeds were knocked out.

The second Semi-Final was won comfortably by our host's favorite, partly due to a more favourable roll of the dice, so, with the clock ticking rapidly and our taxis on the way over from Banchory, the Final had to be a fairly truncated affair. By now, we were limiting clips to just 1 minute, but the result was very clear, despite an abstention from Jeb.

The winner, much to Gary's delight, was Neil Young.

Interesting concept - and great fun. Many thanks again to Gary, who was left with the task of tidying up the mess after we'd gone - but he's home alone this weekend, so he has plenty of time to get the house back in shape before Mel gets back!
