Allen Valleys Folk Festival

I've been a fan of Michael Chapman (check out http://www.michaelchapman.co.uk/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Chapman_(singer)) ever since my young brother brought home his Window album in 1971, so when I spotted that he was appearing at the first ever Allen Valleys Folk Festival (http://www.allenvalleysfolkfestival.co.uk/) this weekend, I had to go.

Allendale is a village in Northumberland, but they managed to get a fairly strong line-up. On Friday night we went to the village hall to see Will Pound (http://willpound.com/), who played harmonica and melodeon:

He was followed by Martin Stephenson and the Daintees (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Stephenson_and_the_Daintees). We were in the local pub beforehand and got chatting to a couple of guys who, hearing our accents, asked about the referendum. As we got up to head to the gig, I asked them if they were going as well? "Yes, we're playing" they replied - they were the Daintees!

Martin Stephenson is an upbeat, madcap performer - very entertaining if you can keep up with all his references and adlib comments. This was the band on stage:

Our main reason for travelling to the festival came on Saturday afternoon when Michael Chapman played in St Cuthbert's church, which holds a maximum of 100 people. We were right down at the front and got some nice shots, backdropped by the stained glass window:

He's a very down to earth, blunt, self-deprecating Yorkshireman. He's 73 now and realises his voice is shot, but he can still play guitar OK, as evidenced by this short video I took - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NnFMjLVRQ4&list=UUBDeleoM99bWx2-P6rMydgA

He played his gig, walked off, packed up his 2 guitars and we watched him load them in the back of his car and drive back home. This was pretty much an easy local gig for a man who still travels the world playing at guitar festivals etc. Superb.
