Headbang - 3rd April, 2015 - part 1

We welcomed guest Headbanger Phil Bates last night, making it virtually a full house of 10 - minus only Jeb - for the first Headbang of 2015.

I had arrived hotfoot from the Algarve so wasn't quite as prepared as usual, notably lacking printed voting sheets, so we simply adopted a popular show of hands method to select our Top 3 from each section, starting, as usual, with the Obituaries:

1 Joe Cocker The Letter/Delta Lady/With a little help from my friends
2 Andy Fraser (Free) Mr. Big
3 Ian McLagan Tin Soldier/Maybe I'm Amazed
There was no disputing that Joe would be the most missed, but I was a little miffed that Mac was pipped to the number two position by Andy Fraser. Democracy - bah!

Other tunes that were played from the recently deceased were:

Clive Palmer (ISB) You know what you could be
Lesley Gore You don't own me
Bobby Keys Whatever gets you through the night
Jimmy Ruffin What becomes of the broken-hearted
John Renbourn (Pentangle) Rosslyn
Big Bank Hank (Sugarhill Gang) Rappers delight
Demis Roussos Rain and tears
Daevid Allen (Soft Machine/Gong) Radio gnome invisible
Steve Strange Night train
Joe B. Mauldin (Crickets) My little girl
Preston Ritter (Electric Prunes) I had too much to dream last night
Alan Bown Gonna fix you good
Others who had passed since the last Headbang, but whose music did not feature last night were:

John Holt
Colin "Stoner" Bentley (Doctors of Madness)
Sheila Stewart
Rock Scully
Jimmy Dickens
Trevor Leonard Ward-Davies ("Dozy")
Kim Fowley (Writer/Producer - Runaways)
Dallas Taylor (C, S & N)
Edgar Froese (Tangerine Dream)
Rod McKuen (Songwriter)
Don Covay
Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek)
Jackie Trent
Cynthia Lennon
The traditional second section was Septuagenarians - those who had celebrated their 70th birthdays since the last Headbang. The voting here was:

1 Eric Clapton Badge
2 Stephen Stills For what it's worth
3 Rod Stewart Gasoline Alley
Others whose tunes were played were:

Bonnie Bramlett You really got a hold on me
Brenda Lee Sweet Nuthin's
John Densmore (Doors) Light my fire
Mick Jones (Foreigner) Cold as ice
Robert Wyatt (Soft Machine) Shipbuilding
Elkie Brooks Pearl's a singer
Eric Stewart (Mindbenders/10cc) Game of love
Robin Trower Bridge of Sighs
Those septuagenarians whose music didn't feature were:

Booker T. Jones
Eric Bloom (Blue Oyster Cult)
Neil Innes (Bonzos/Rutles)
Maggie Bell
Dave Walker (Savoy Brown/Fleetwood Mac)
John Helliwell (Supertramp)
John Barbata (Turtles/Jefferson Airplane)
The 3rd section was a carry-over from the last Headbang - Numbers - songs whose titles featured the numbers 0 to 9, and the Top 3 here were:

1 David Bowie Five years
2 Byrds Eight miles high
3 Chicago 25 or 6 to 4
The rest of this section featured:

Medicine Head One and one is one
Beatles Two of us
Meat Loaf Two out of three ain't bad
Tom Robinson Band 2-4-6-8 motorway
Arthur Lee & Love Seven & seven is
Searchers Love potion number 9
The witching hour was fast approaching and a few were anxiously looking at their watches, but first of all we had to play Gary's selection of Battle of the Rockers - 6 heavy classics from hard rock outfits. The Top 3 here were:

1 AC/DC Whole lotta Rosie
2 Who Baba O'Riley
3 Deep Purple Highway Star
The other three were:

Black Sabbath Paranoid
Led Zeppelin Dazed & Confused
Thin Lizzy Emerald
AC/DC's live performance from River Plate, Argentina stole the show - visually at least - and we decided it was appropriate that they should feature in the team photo:
