Headbang results - 17 Aug, 2018

In the end, just 7 of us made it along to the Headbang last night - back at Dave's place again. A few had tried their hand at bowls earlier on so we had Ken B and Ian Sh joining us for pre-Headbang drinks in the Douglas before Gerry drove us all out to Potarch. Here's how the voting went on the evening:

1) OBITUARIES

10 tracks were played from 9 notable artistes who had passed since the last gathering:

Maggie Stredder Vernons Girls; Ladybirds - house singers on TotP; harmony for Puppet on a String, Hey Joe & Ernie etc Tribute
Mike Harrison Spooky Tooth vocalist (missed from previous Headbang) The Weight
Avicii (Tim Bergling) DJ, musician, producer In memoriam
Scott Hutchison Frightened Rabbit The Woodpile
Danny Kirwan Fleetwood Mac guitarist Like it this way
Jon Hiseman Colosseum co-founder and drummer The Kettle
DJ Fontana Elvis' drummer Blue suede shoes
Alan Longmuir Bay City Rollers' founder and bass Tribute
Aretha Franklin   Don't play that song/Think
There was no doubting who was going to win the "most missed" vote - the "Queen of Soul" had just passed the day before and the media was full of tributes. Honourable mentions went to Danny Kirwan and Jon Hiseman.

Strictly for the record, there were another 16 whose passing was noted, but no tracks were played:

Gary Burden Album cover artist to the Doors, Joni Mitchell, Eagles etc
Liam O'Flynn Planxty Uillean piper
Jonny Walker Busker and street activist
Judith Simons Journalist and possible inspiration for Hey Jude
Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang
Lill-Babs Swedish singer "more popular than the Beatles"
Cecil Taylor Jazz pianist & poet
Big Tom (McBride) & the Mainliners - "the Irish Johnny Cash"
Charles Neville Saxophonist & Neville brother
Larry Harvey Burning Man founder
Jabo Starks James Brown's drummer - the only member of the band never to be fined for missing a beat
Abi Ofarim Esther and
Jalal Mansur Nuriddin "Grandfather of rap" - Last Poets
Nick Knox Drummer with Cramps 77-91
Joe Jackson Patriarch and manager of the family
Lorrie Collins Collins Kids

 2) SEPTUAGENARIANS

This category is growing all the time - I had to choose from a potential list of as many as 36 musical notables who had reached 70 since the last Headbang. I whittled it down to 15 and, after playing the tracks, we all voted on the best:

1 Pick Withers Sultans of swing 85
2 Brian Eno Do the Strand 81
3 Thijs van Leer Hocus pocus 81
4 Jimmy Cliff Many rivers to cross 78
5 Barry Hay Radar Love 62
6= Cat Stevens Lady D'Arbanville 59
6= Jeremy Spencer Tribute to Elmore James 59
8 Steve Winwood Medicated Goo 57
9= Todd Rundgren I saw the light 49
9= Stevie Nicks Dreams 49
11 Ian Paice Space Truckin' 45
12 Wayne Kramer Rambling rose 38
13 Kate Pierson Roam 35
14 (Charles Thomas) "Tom" Johnston Listen to the music 34
15 Bill Ward Iron man 28
Again, strictly for the record, the other 21 Septuagenarians were:

1 Gordon Giltrap Guitarist
2 Carol Douglas "Doctor's Orders"
3 Philip Wright Paper Lace lead singer
4 Phil Mogg UFO lead singer
5 Jan Hammer Mahavishnu Orchestra, composer, producer
6 Craig Frost Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band/Grand Funk Railroad keyboardist
7 Pete Wingfield "18 with a bullet"
8 Colin Towns Composer, keyboards, session musician
9 Grace Jones
10 Klaus Meine Scorpions lead singer, composer
11 Alan Longmuir Bay City Rollers
12 Don Airey Replaced Jon Lord in Deep Purple, played with so many other bands
13 Myles Goodwin Producer, guitarist, lead vocalist with April Wine
14 Patrick Moraz Keyboards - Yes & Moody Blues (who he sued)
15 Bill Kirchen Guitarist/singer/songwriter - Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen
16 Paul Barrere Little Feat guitar from 1972
17 Artimus Pyle (born Uncle Sticky Fingers) Lynryd Skynryd drummer 74-77 & 87-91
18 Cesar Zuiderwijk Golden Earring drummer since 1970
19 Gerald Casale Devo - left handed guitar
20 Russell Morris Australian singer-songwriter
21 (Gary Stephen) "Angry" Anderson Lead singer with Rose Tattoo since 1976
3) NEW(ISH) ARTISTES

Now a regular feature, we played 7 tracks from artistes who hadn't featured before and were at least relatively new to most of us:

Greta van Fleet Highway Tune
Oh Sees Toe Cutter - Thumb Buster
Boy Azooga Loner Boogie
Christine and the Queens Girlfriend
Lump Curse of the Contemporary
Shame One Rizla
Starcrawler Love's gone again
The star turn was the Robert Plant approved young band who sound uncannily like Led Zep in their heyday - Greta Van Fleet - with 4 of us opting for them as our favourite. Christine and the Queens picked up two votes and Shame one.

4) BASS PLAYING SINGER-SONGWRITERS

My self-imposed "rules" for this theme was that the artiste had actually to be playing bass and singing on a song that he/she had composer credits on - not easy to find enough quality video to fit! Anyway, voting was as follows:

1 Paul McCartney Get back 72
2 Ronnie Lane Song of a baker 61
3 Jack Bruce White room 60
4 Sting Walking on the moon 54
5 Roger Waters Careful with that axe Eugene 52
6 Greg Lake 21st century schizoid man 50
7 Rick Danko This wheel's on fire 48
8 Brian Wilson I get around 42
9 Phil Lynott The Rocker 34
10 Kim Deal Gigantic 30
11 Lemmy Motorhead 25
12 Geddy Lee Spirit of radio 18
5) LOST ICONIC VENUES

This was set up to be a bit of a quiz for the Headbangers - and a difficult one at that. Some of the venues were well-kent and easy to spot, but others were almost impossible to differentiate - particularly the latter London ones. Anyway, this was what was played:

Status Quo Apollo, Glasgow Roll over, lay down
Muse Astoria, London Plug in baby
Beatles Cavern, Liverpool Some other guy
Cyril Davies' All Stars, feat. Long John Baldry Ealing Jazz Club See see rider
Elvis Costello & the Attractions Eric's, Liverpool Watching the detectives
Bob Dylan Free Trade Hall, Manchester Like a rolling stone
New Order Hacienda, Manchester As it is when it was
Damned Hammersmith Palais Smash it up
Clash Lewisham Odeon Working for the clampdown
Jimi Hendrix Experience Marquee, London Purple haze
Queen Rainbow, London Stone cold crazy
6) HEADBANGERS' HOMETOWN HEROES

Another little quiz - guess which Headbanger's hometown these artistes come from? Voting was as follows:
1 Stone the Crows Glasgow Ian Penicillin Blues 50
2 Jack Bruce Kirkintilloch Gerry Politician 46
3 Annie Lennox Aberdeen Gary Under Pressure 44
4 Jake Bugg Nottingham Dave Broken 37
5 Elton John Harrow Malcolm Sweet painted lady 33
6 Aztec Camera East Kilbride Colin Reason for living 30
7 Steve Gibbons Band Wolverhampton Andy Tulane 29
8= Doogie Whyte (Rainbow) Bellshill Aidan Hall of the mountain king 23
8= Joss Stone Salisbury/Aldershot/Dover Steve You had me 23
Jeb hadn't submitted his hometown but said he would have been the same as Gary anyway.

So that was that - 64 tracks played, only 16 of which had been seen before, and 16 artistes who had never before appeared at a Headbang. All that remained was the traditional team photo, of which there are two versions, both backdropped by Aretha's scene in the Blues Brothers - one with flash and one without:
