2) SEPTUAGENARIANS
This category is growing all the time - I had to choose from a potential list of as many as 36 musical notables who had reached 70 since the last Headbang. I whittled it down to 15 and, after playing the tracks, we all voted on the best:

17 | Artimus Pyle (born Uncle Sticky Fingers) | Lynryd Skynryd drummer 74-77 & 87-91 |
18 | Cesar Zuiderwijk | Golden Earring drummer since 1970 |
19 | Gerald Casale | Devo - left handed guitar |
20 | Russell Morris | Australian singer-songwriter |
21 | (Gary Stephen) "Angry" Anderson | Lead singer with Rose Tattoo since 1976 |
Now a regular feature, we played 7 tracks from artistes who hadn't featured before and were at least relatively new to most of us:
Greta van Fleet | Highway Tune |
Oh Sees | Toe Cutter - Thumb Buster |
Boy Azooga | Loner Boogie |
Christine and the Queens | Girlfriend |
Lump | Curse of the Contemporary |
Shame | One Rizla |
Starcrawler | Love's gone again |
4) BASS PLAYING SINGER-SONGWRITERS
My self-imposed "rules" for this theme was that the artiste had actually to be playing bass and singing on a song that he/she had composer credits on - not easy to find enough quality video to fit! Anyway, voting was as follows:
1 | Paul McCartney | Get back | 72 |
2 | Ronnie Lane | Song of a baker | 61 |
3 | Jack Bruce | White room | 60 |
4 | Sting | Walking on the moon | 54 |
5 | Roger Waters | Careful with that axe Eugene | 52 |
6 | Greg Lake | 21st century schizoid man | 50 |
7 | Rick Danko | This wheel's on fire | 48 |
8 | Brian Wilson | I get around | 42 |
9 | Phil Lynott | The Rocker | 34 |
10 | Kim Deal | Gigantic | 30 |
11 | Lemmy | Motorhead | 25 |
12 | Geddy Lee | Spirit of radio | 18 |
This was set up to be a bit of a quiz for the Headbangers - and a difficult one at that. Some of the venues were well-kent and easy to spot, but others were almost impossible to differentiate - particularly the latter London ones. Anyway, this was what was played:
Status Quo | Apollo, Glasgow | Roll over, lay down |
Muse | Astoria, London | Plug in baby |
Beatles | Cavern, Liverpool | Some other guy |
Cyril Davies' All Stars, feat. Long John Baldry | Ealing Jazz Club | See see rider |
Elvis Costello & the Attractions | Eric's, Liverpool | Watching the detectives |
Bob Dylan | Free Trade Hall, Manchester | Like a rolling stone |
New Order | Hacienda, Manchester | As it is when it was |
Damned | Hammersmith Palais | Smash it up |
Clash | Lewisham Odeon | Working for the clampdown |
Jimi Hendrix Experience | Marquee, London | Purple haze |
Queen | Rainbow, London | Stone cold crazy |
Another little quiz - guess which Headbanger's hometown these artistes come from? Voting was as follows:
1 | Stone the Crows | Glasgow | Ian | Penicillin Blues | 50 |
2 | Jack Bruce | Kirkintilloch | Gerry | Politician | 46 |
3 | Annie Lennox | Aberdeen | Gary | Under Pressure | 44 |
4 | Jake Bugg | Nottingham | Dave | Broken | 37 |
5 | Elton John | Harrow | Malcolm | Sweet painted lady | 33 |
6 | Aztec Camera | East Kilbride | Colin | Reason for living | 30 |
7 | Steve Gibbons Band | Wolverhampton | Andy | Tulane | 29 |
8= | Doogie Whyte (Rainbow) | Bellshill | Aidan | Hall of the mountain king | 23 |
8= | Joss Stone | Salisbury/Aldershot/Dover | Steve | You had me | 23 |
So that was that - 64 tracks played, only 16 of which had been seen before, and 16 artistes who had never before appeared at a Headbang. All that remained was the traditional team photo, of which there are two versions, both backdropped by Aretha's scene in the Blues Brothers - one with flash and one without:
