Headbang tracks & votes - 29 Nov 19

Beers first in the Douglas for most of us and then an excellent takeaway curry - well done, CK - and we managed to start the music not too long after the scheduled 7:30 pm. Newly installed as our starter theme was:

SEPTUAGENARIANS

7 tracks played here and the votes were:

1 Lindsay Buckingham Big love 51
2 Simon Kirke Can't get enough 48
3 Bruce Springsteen Because the night 47
4 Bonnie Raitt Love me like a man 45
5 Terry Reid Live life 24
6 Richard Hell Blank generation 21
7 Rick Springfield Jessie's girl 16
There were another 11 musical notables who had become septuagenarians since our last get-together - we didn't play any of their music, but, for the record, they were:

Tim Renwick Lead guitar - Sutherland Brothers & Quiver
Eric Carmen Raspberries/solo
Gene Simmons Bass & vocals - Kiss
David Allan Coe Singer & songwriter
Gloria Gaynor
Tony Stevens Bass - Foghat/Savoy Brown
Kerry Livgren Founder member of Kansas
Greg Douglass Guitar - Hot Tuna
Rick Vito Guitar - Fleetwood Mac - 1987-91
Bob Siebenberg Drums - Supertramp
James Young Lead guitar - Styx
OCTOGENARIANS

A new theme - 6 prominent musicians had reached the age of 80:

Ginger Baker Pressed rat and warthog
James Burton What'd I say/Johnny B. Goode
Jerry Allison Peggy Sue
Grace Slick Somebody to love
Eddie Holland
Tina Turner Proud Mary
We didn't play any of Eddie Holland's many hit compositions, because we had another new theme:

NONOGENARIANS

Berry Gordy III, known as Berry Gordy, Jr, had his 90th birthday this week, falling in the 60th year since he formed what became Tamla-Motown, so it was appropriate to play a short tribute - the trailer to the recently released documentary, Hitsville - The Making of Motown.

Voting on these 2 new categories was by a simple show of hands - Tina garnered 6 votes, Ginger 2 and Grace 1.

Chronological order dictated that the next theme had to be:

OBITUARIES

I selected 9 notables with a musical connection who had passed recently and we played the following in order of their passing (note their ages):

DA Pennebaker Film-maker - Don't Look Back 94.0 Subterranean homesick blues
Peter Fonda Actor - Easy Rider; brother of Jane, son of Henry 79.5 The Pusher

Malcolm "Molly" Duncan AWB sax 74.1 Pick up the pieces
Paul Barrere Little Feat guitar 71.3 Dixie Chicken
Iain Sutherland Sutherland Brothers & Quiver 71.0 Arms of Mary
This was no contest - Ginger was unanimously voted Most Missed.

We should also acknowledge the many others who had passed recently - all 15 of them:

ABBEY ROAD 50

A short section to commemorate that it was now 50 years since this album - in my opinion possibly the Beatles' greatest? - was released. The band, of course, never played it live, but I found some other acts who do and we played side 2's medley all the way through:

Saltwater Roses You never give me your money/Sun king/Mean Mr. Mustard/Polythene Pam/She came in through the bathroom window
Analogues Golden slumbers/Carry that weight
Paul McCartney The End
Not forgetting to finish with Paul playing Her Majesty - in front of the Queen!

We thought the best of the bunch were Saltwater Roses - almost note for note.

A number of iconic/historic record labels have had big anniversaries this year so the next theme was:

GUESS THE LABEL

Some were very easy, but one or two caused some furrowed brows:

Specials Too much too young 2-Tone 40th
Edgar Broughton Band Apache Drop Out Harvest 50th
Juicy Lucy Who do you love? Vertigo 50th
Nice Country Pie Charisma 50th
Tom Waits Downtown train Island 60th
Stevie Wonder Living for the City Tamla-Motown 60th
Each of these labels has a distinct style, so the Headbangers were asked - if you were going to a party, which of these labels' LP's would you be carrying under your arm, showing off to all and sundry? Island was the clear winner with 6 votes, but 2-Tone got 3.
