3rd Virtual Headbang - 8th July, 2020 - Schedule

For this Wednesday's Headbang we have 7 themes:

'GENARIANS

I have segued together extracts of 5 tracks by artistes who have celebrated their 70th birthdays since our last Headbang, followed by another segue of 3 fuller performances from recent Octogenarians, with passing references to others on the fringes of the Headbangers' musical tastes.

OBITUARIES

Not many have passed recently - just 2 notables that we'll be remembering musically, plus a brief mention of other "fringe" players. There are, however, still 4 days to go yet, so perhaps this section could still expand further.

NOTABLE ABSENTEES (5)

Becoming a regular feature, this will be the 5th time this theme has been used, when we play just 4 tracks from artistes that have somehow eluded all Headbangs until now.

CLASSICAL CONNECTIONS

A new theme showcasing rock musicians inspired by, or simply playing, classical compositions. Three separate segued sections featuring, or hinting at, a total of 9 classical melodies - and there's many more out there, so this theme could feature again at future Headbangs.

AMERICANA (2)

This theme got a slightly mixed reception at the last Headbang - some good, some bad - but we're going to try again with another 6 tracks by musicians who I think fit in to this slightly difficult to define genre.

BEST OF THE BEST (3)

For the last decade we have been voting on our favourite tracks at each Headbang and a "winner" is declared from the votes cast. In June, 2013 we replayed the winning tracks from the previous 10 Headbangs and SAHB's Framed was our first BEST OF THE BEST. Roll forward two years and we did it again and this time FREE's Mr. Big came out on top. This time we are going to play the 10 tracks that were voted BEST OF THE BEST from December, 2016 to November, 2019. One day we might have a BEST OF THE BEST OF THE BEST feature!

ISLE OF WIGHT (2)

Some of you may have been expecting a GLASTONBURY 50 theme this time, but I maintain the BBC's recent celebrations are premature as the first festival held there (labelled The Pilton Pop, Blues and Folk Festival) wasn't held until September, 1970. Rest assured we will commemorate the anniversary nearer the time, but meanwhile we return to IoW. Last time around, we focused on the seminal year of 1970, but this time we feature 6 classic performances from the current millennium.

That's a total of 43 tracks, only 15 of which have been played before and featuring a total of 12 new artistes. The full playing time is two and a half hours. Given that there'll be some chat as well, I estimate we should finish about 11 pm.
