3rd Virtual Headbang - 8th July, 2020 - Votes etc

Despite what I reported in my earlier post, most of us did manage to watch and listen to some interesting music on Wednesday night. Here's the story of the music played:

GENARIANS

Septuagenarians first - a segue of extracts of the following was played:

Tom Robinson War baby
Suzi Quatro Devil gate drive
Barbara Gaskin It's my party
Ann Wilson Barracuda
Michael Monarch Born to be wild
Others who had reached the age of 70 since our last gathering were:

Deniece Williams "Free"
Joey Kramer Aerosmith drummer
John Paul Young Singer - "Love is in the air"
Huey Lewis & the News
Next were the Octogenarians:

Tom Jones Long time gone
Nancy Sinatra Bang bang
Ringo Starr Boys
In the first track, Tom Jones was, rather bizarrely, backed by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young on this David Crosby tune.

Only one other 80 year old - session bass player Chuck Rainey.

OBITUARIES

Just 3 tracks played:

Steve Priest Sweet bass Tribute
Keith Tippett Jazz pianist/King Crimson/married to Julie Driscoll Cat Food
Ennio Morricone Composer - the Good, the Bad and the Ugly etc Advert
Others who passed recently:

Ricky Valance "Tell Laura I Love Her"
Maragarita Pracatan Cuban singer - Clive James show
Jeanie Lambe Glaswegian Jazz singer (George Chisholm)
Johnny Mandel Composer - M.A.S.H. etc.

NOTABLE ABSENTEES (5)

Just 4 tracks:

Chicken Shack See see baby
Streetwalkers Run for cover
John Cooper Clarke I don't want to be nice
Tenpole Tudor Swords of 1,000 men

CLASSICAL CONNECTIONS

Three segues were played, each containing 3 extracts of music that was either "inspired by", plagiarised or simply rock versions of classical pieces. First up was:

Procul Harum A whiter shade of pale
Move Night of fear
Love Sculpture Sabre dance
Respectively, the Classical Connections were:

J.S. Bach Air on a G String
Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture
Aram Khachaturian Gayane (ballet)
Next were a band who some of us remember playing at the Burns Howff pub in Glasgow back in the late '60's/early '70's - BEGGAR'S OPERA. Their 9 minute opus, Raymond's Road is well worth a listen on You Tube, but I extracted the following 3 pieces to play:

Bach Toccata and Fugue in D minor
Rossini William Tell Overture
Grieg In the Hall of the Mountain King (Peer Gynt Suite)
The last segue was:

Manfred Mann's Earth Band Joybringer
ELP Fanfare for the common man
Sting Russians
In turn, each came from:

Gustav Holst Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity (Part IV of the Planets Suite)
Aaron Copland Fanfare for the common man
Sergei Prokofiev Romance theme from the Lieutenant Kijé Suite
The Headbangers performed well identifying the sources of all the tracks.
