Gary was a surprise late addition to the headbang last night, and we had the debut of Andy's son, James. Only a true headbanger and Hendrix fan would give his son the name James Marshall (Hendrix)!
It was another excellent evening of eclectic music, featuring almost exclusively previously unseen video clips. Full track listing later - plus a couple of quizzes, a vote and a poll, but, first of all, here's the end of evening team photo, taken in front of the Animals playing Baby Let Me Take You Home from 1964 - note Eric's tartan jacket!:
Suitable dates for the next session for all current and potential headbangers are hard to find - viz last night, which had originally been scheduled specifically to allow Jeb to attend, but, in the end, he couldn't make it. More fool he, watching Czech Republic v Scotland!
Can everyone please let me know as soon as possible all dates between now and the end of March when they are definitely not available, and we'll work it out from there. I go Down Under on 14th January, but I'm OK the last couple of Fridays in February and the first 3 in March.
As regards the quizzes, there are three - one could probably only be done if you were there last night, but the others are more general - have a go. They are:
- The bands who appeared twice last night can be deduced from the list below, but which individual artistes featured more than once in different guises?
- There were several "connections" in the videos shown last night - how many can you name?
- How many covers are listed below - and who did the original/best remembered?
For those that were there last night, please also vote for your top 3 clips played.
In accordance with well-established precedent, the evening started with the Obituary section. Nine notable artistes had passed away since our last headbang:
- Mike Edwards (ELO cellist)
- Pete Quaife (Kinks' bass player)
- Bobby Hebb ("Sunny")
- Crispian St Peters ("You were on my mind")
- Don Partridge ("Rosie")
- Ronnie James Dio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_James_Dio)
- Stuart Cable (Stereophonics' drummer)
- Jimmy Dean ("Big Bad John")
- Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider)
A couple of John Lennon tracks were then played - it would have been his 70th birthday today - Slippin' and Slidin' and Well, Well, Well.
The next section was a 40th anniversary special - 1970 was a seminal year in many ways, so we thought we'd commemorate it:
- Glastonbury - this year was the 40th anniversary festival and we showed 4 clips - Dead Weather, Muse, Ray Davies and Seasick Steve.
- The famous Isle of Wight Festival - Malcolm was there in 1970, although that was actually the 3rd festival there. Dylan played there in 1969, but the 1970 one was memorable for the size and scale - and the trouble. The unexpectedly large crowds led to Parliament passing the "Isle of Wight Act" preventing gatherings of more than 5,000 people on the island without a special licence. We showed clips from Jethro Tull, the Who and Jimi Hendrix.
- The fractious Let It Be album and film was finally released. A clip of the Fab Four performing the title track live was played.
And so to the main event - basically just favourites/requests, many carried over from the last headbang. There was a last minute re-shuffling of the playing order to accommodate a number of Gary's requests earlier this year. The full listing was:
