Some quiz answers

From http://banchoryheadbangers.blogspot.com/

Here's my answers to the "covers" question - please feel free to add to or comment on:

  1. Tom Waits - Waltzing Matilda - technically the song is officially called Tom Traubert's Blues and whilst TW wrote it, he built Australia's well known bush ballad Waltzing Matilda in as the chorus.
  2. Faces - I'm Losing You - originally a 1966 hit for the Temptations - the full title is prefaced in parentheses by "(I know I'm)".
  3. Steve Winwood & Eric Clapton - Little Wing - written by Jimi Hendrix and featured on Axis: Bold as Love.
  4. Dr. Feelgood - Route 66 - again the full title is prefaced by "(Get your kicks on)" and was written by Bobby Troup in 1946. The first recording that year was by Nat King Cole and Perry Como also did a popular version in 1949, but probably the most famous version for our generation was the opening track on the Stones' first album. Famously, Mick hadn't a clue about some of the places mentioned on the route from Chicago to L.A. and just mumbled his way through the latter part. For the record, the places supposed to have been mentioned should have been St Louis; Missouri; Oklahoma City; Amarillo; Gallup, New Mexico; Flagstaff, Arizona; Winona; Kingman; Barstow; San Bernadino.
  5. Nirvana - Where did you sleep last night? This song, also known as "In The Pines" and "Black Girl", is reputed to date back to the 1870's, but was initially popularised in the 1940's by Huddie Ledbetter (Lead Belly). The Four Pennies had a UK hit with it in 1965 - watch it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEDHl9L2BWY
  6. Nazareth - Love Hurts - first recorded by the Everly Brothers in 1960.
  7. Lulu - Shout - written and recorded by the Isley Brothers in 1959. Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VL9xOLpwI0I
  8. Nice - Hang on to a dream - to give it its full title it should be prefaced by "How Can We" and was written and recorded by Tim Hardin - it was the final track on his first LP, released in 1966.
  9. Animals - Baby let me take you home - the song is an arrangement of Eric Von Schmidt's rendering of "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down" as covered by Bob Dylan, on his first, self-titled, album.
  10. Blind Faith - Well alright - by the late, great Buddy Holly.
  11. Swinging Blue Jeans - You're no good - written by Clint Ballard, Jr and the first hit version was by Betty Everett in 1963 - the year before the SBJ's UK hit. Linda Rondstadt went to number one in USA with the song in 1975.
  12. Rolling Stones - I just wanna make love to you - written by the legend that is Willie Dixon and first recorded by Muddy Waters in 1954 (with Willie playing bass). Etta James' 1961 version is probably the definitive one.

That's my take on the covers - did I miss anything?

Other answers to follow in due course.
