Last night's Headbang went well and there were a number of firsts:
- First time we'd held a Headbang at Jeb's house
- First transatlantic technology headbang
- The show featured the oldest ever video clip
- Earliest start and earliest finish ever
- Pre-headbang draw for Rock Champions knock-out next time around
Thanks to Jeb for hosting. Next time around the location will probably either be at the Douglas Hotel (if we can persuade Steve and sort out the sound) or possibly in the Scout Hall. Timing by mutual consent but possibly Midsummer again - Friday 21st June - how does this suit everyone?
The transatlantic link-up with Dave was only partially successful. Despite Dave and I holding several trials, we couldn't quite get all the technical hitches sorted out. The plan had been for Dave to take part in a Windows meeting and that way he would see and hear what we were screening on my laptop and be able to participate all the way from Houston Tx. The problem was on my laptop - I had problems with the microphone which was feeding back to the speakers so I had to disable it. As a result we ended up just Skypeing Dave and we were able to see and hear him projected on the screen - and take a tour of his pad - but he couldn't hear us - perhaps just as well, as Gerry gave his video tour of his apartment the yellow card!
Malcolm was, unfortunately, nowhere to be seen - he hadn't arrived at Dave's at the time we Skyped. He's becoming the forgotten man of the Headbangers - it's been a while since he's managed to attend a Headbang. Perhaps next time?
The oldest ever clip shown at any Headbang was the 20 second video of the Andrews Sisters from 1942! Beat that!
We started sharp at 8 pm - we were all seated, with beers and curries on laps when the Obituary section started. It usually takes a while for everyone to get organised but we were bang on schedule at this stage.
We took our time with the voting and the Skype diversion knocked the timetable a little and so the Headbang ran a little past the planned midnight finish. We were half way through the last section - Jailbirds - when the witching hour arrived and Gary promptly stood up and said he was off - and he took Colin, Ian and Steve with him - and off they rode in their pumpkin.
The rest of us finished the few videos left and phoned a taxi, which arrived bang on cue. Of course, we hadn't had time to take the usual team photo, so we quickly posed outside as our taxi waited and watched:
Jeb - and dog, Dylan, Andy, me and Gerry |
The next Headbang will feature Andy's suggestion of a Rock Champions League knock-out and I had brought along some names which each person selected. There were 4 seeds - Beatles, Elvis, Stones and Dylan - and a further 8 megastars were selected from my video archive and they went in to the Qualifying Round draw, which produced the following result:
Led Zeppelin |
v. |
David Bowie |
U2 |
v. |
AC/DC |
Pink Floyd/Roger Waters |
v. |
Who/Pete Townsend/Roger Daltrey |
Jimi Hendrix |
v. |
Bruce Springsteen |
The ties will be 2-legged affairs - home and away - and the winners of the above will, in order, play Beatles, Stones, Dylan and Elvis in that order in the Quarter Finals. Be there at the next Headbang to watch the action!
Last night also brought the return of dancing to the Headbang. It used to be a regular feature many years ago in the early days up at DonLisa before video technology - even before digital music, when it was all vinyl. When we reached the end of the Cheating Songs section, Jeb was a little surprised/disappointed that we hadn't shown a classic of the genre - Alex Harvey's version of Delilah - so he promptly got his CD out and played it, prompting Gary and he to get up on the floor and emulate the famous tip-toe dance that Zal and the boys did. I wasn't quick enough with my camera, but I did catch them in full Headbanging mode towards the end of the song. Watch it here - http://youtu.be/Pbdl_bbvnpY
So that's all for now. I'll collate the votes in the next couple of days and post the results. Meanwhile, start thinking about your top 3 songs from the evening.
Colin will let us all know the cost of the curries and Andy could do the same with the taxi please?
