Headbang voting results

It was a busy evening at Gary's on Friday night - 8 separate themes to get through before the Finzean curfew. It was a full attendance as well from the Senior members of the Headbangers - with one exception - the absent legend that is DMW was prominent on the Powerpoint agenda presentation, however:

We started as usual with the Obituaries - there have been 24 since the last Headbang - all commented on in previous blog postings - but we featured just 3 of them in video clips:

Ziggy Stardust Rock and roll suicide
J J Cale After midnight
Jackie Lomax (Apple) Sour milk sea

We then had a simple show of hands as to the most significant/most missed and the clear winner was, of course, Ziggy Stardust, who was killed off by Bowie on 3rd July, 1973.

Septuagenarians was next up  and there had been as many as 16 who had crossed this age threshold since the last Headbang. I selected just 10 of these to play:

Robbie Robertson (Band) The Weight
Randy Bachman (BTO) You ain't seen nothing yet
Mick Jagger Sympathy for the Devil
Christine McVie (Fleetwood Mac) You Make Lovin' Fun
Ronnie Spector (Ronettes) Be my baby
Tony Joe White Rainy night in Georgia
Steve Miller Space Cowboy
Jim McCarty (Yardbirds) Train kept a rollin'
Billy J Kramer Trains & Boats & Planes
Georgie Fame Yeh Yeh
Jeff Wayne (War of the Worlds)
Judith Durham (Seekers)
Jerry Miller (Moby Grape)
David Soul
Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead)
Toni Basil

Again we resorted to a simple show of hands and there were 3 votes each for Robbie Robertson and Randy Bachman, with one each for Mick Jagger, Christine McVie and Ronnie Spector.

Glastonbury 2013 was the next theme and this time there was a full written vote, which resulted in the following pecking order and votes:

1 Elvis Costello Pump it up 50
2 Alabama Shakes Hold on 45
3 Arctic Monkeys Mardy Bum 39
4 Gary Clark Jr Next door neighbour blues 35
5= Johnny Marr How soon is now 31
5= Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds Jubilee Street 31
7 Mumford & Sons Little Lion Man 29
8 Rodriguez Sugarman 28
On to Ailments. There were some pretty old clips here, ranging from 1958 up to the most recent - 1995, with the following outcome:

1 Led Zeppelin Dazed & confused 63
2 Black Sabbath Paranoid 57
3 Peggy Lee Fever 50
4 John Lennon & Plastic Ono Band Cold Turkey 43
5 Tom Waits Heart Attack and Vine 39
6 Jerry Lee Lewis Rocking Pneumonia and the boogie woogie flu 32
7 Radiohead The Bends 27
8 Tom Jones Chills and Fever 13
The 5th theme was Jobs - suggested by Malcolm. The alcohol consumption was rising by now and the voting was starting to get a little ragged. Some people couldn't split a number of the acts, resulting in some half marks here - and perhaps a slightly surprising winner:

1 10 cc Good morning Judge 50.5
2 Jethro Tull Teacher 48.0
3 Glen Campbell Wichita Lineman 46.5
4 Cream Politician 45.5
5 Waterboys Fisherman's blues 40.0
6 Jackson Browne Doctor my eyes 37.0
7 Donovan Hurdy Gurdy Man 36.5
8 James Taylor Millworker 20.0
Theme number 6 was the slightly controversial subject of Misogyny in rock. The 10 tracks played were:

Rolling Stones Under my thumb
Monks Nice legs shame about her face
Squeeze Up the junction
Redbone Witch Queen of New Orleans
Wishbone Ash Jailbait
David Bowie Queen Bitch
Rolling Stones Bitch
Elton John The bitch is back
Eagles Witchy woman
Jilted John Jilted John
The show of hands declared the first two named above as the most misogynist with 4 votes each, with Squeeze also getting a solitary mention.

Just 2 themes left now and the clock was ticking fast towards Stan the Man's planned taxi pick-up at 12:45 am. Trains & Boats & Planes was the penultimate theme, with 3 tracks from each mode of transport played:

Doobie Brothers Long train running
Jam Down in the Tube Station at Midnight
Jethro Tull Locomotive Breath
Doors Crystal Ship
Madness Night boat to Cairo
Beach Boys Sloop John B
Status Quo Paper Plane
Steve Miller Band Jet Airliner
Motors Airport
Another show of hands declared Trains to be the most popular sub-theme, with Locomotive Breath easily the most popular track here.

The last theme of Space had to be a bit hurried, but we did manage a full written vote for this one:

1 Muse Supermassive black hole 55
2 David Bowie Space Oddity 50
3 Elton John Rocket Man 48
4= Pink Floyd Interstellar Overdrive 41
4= Rolling Stones 2000 Light years from home 41
6 Deep Purple Space Truckin' 35
7 Lou Reed Satellite of Love 30
8 Steve Miller Space Cowboy 24
That was it - just time for quick votes for the Top 3 Themes and Top 3 Tracks - plus the traditional team photo - details in the next blog posting, along with some of the linking/cross-thematic tracks, which nobody commented on during the evening.
