Headbang - 3-3-17 - Results Part I

Steve and Malcolm were M.I.A. but the remaining 8 Headbangers all showed up at Gary's last night for the first gathering of the year - and what a technical disaster it was - a number of the video files refused to yield any sound and imaginations had to be put to full use.

As usual, the Obituary section opened proceedings. There had been 17 notables passed since the last Headbang and we played 12 tracks from 11 of these - well we tried to anyway. Can's 1976 single I Want More was the first track to misbehave, but the rest of this section played OK. The Top 3 Most Missed were voted on as follows:

Rick Parfitt (Status Quo) Down the dustpipe/Paper Plane 1970/2
George Michael Somebody to love 1992
Peter Sarstedt Where do you go to my lovely? 1969
Other tracks played were:

Mike Kellie (Spooky Tooth/Only Ones drummer) Better by you, better than me 1969
Deke Leonard (Man/Iceberg) Day and Night 1975
John Wetton (Renaissance, Family, King Crimson, Roxy Music, Asia, Uriah Heep, UK, Wishbone Ash etc bass) Heat of the moment 1982
Jaki Leibezeit (Can drummer) I want more 1976
Pete Overend Watts (Mott the Hoople bass) Medley 2013
Al Jarreau Moonlighting 1987
Buddy Greco The lady is a tramp 1965
Peter Skellern You're a lady 1973
Others with a musical connection who had passed included:

Alphonse Mouzon (Weather Report drummer)
Allan Williams (Beatles' first manager)
Yanni Alexis Mardas ("Magic Alex")
Maggie Roche (Roches)
David Axelrod (Composer/arranger/producer)
Larry Coryell (Jazz guitarist)
The second theme, as always, is Septuagenarians and 15 notables had achieved this milestone since our last gathering. This was where the first ballot papers were issued and the results of the Finzean jury were:

1 Doug Yule (Velvet Underground bass/organ/vocals) I'm waiting for the man 109
2 Jan Akkerman (Focus guitar) Hocus Pocus 102
3 Melanie Ruby Tuesday 99
4 Patti Smith Beacause the night 95
5 Rod Evans (Deep Purple singer) Hush 88
6 Jimmy Buffet Southern Cross 74
7 Dave Davies Death of a clown 63
8 Edgar Winter Rock 'n' roll boogie woogie 57
9 Terry Sylvester (Swinging Blue Jeans/Hollies) Long cool woman in a black dress 57
10 Marianne Faithfull The ballad of Lucy Jordan 52
11 John Lees (Barclay James Harvest vocals/guitar) Rock n Roll Star 47
12 Jimmy Ibbotson (Nitty Gritty Dirtband) Mr. Bojangles 44
13 Sandie Shaw Hand in glove 44
14 Normie Row (Aussie singer/songwriter/actor) Que sera sera 18
15 Dennis DeYoung (Styx vocalist/keyboards) Babe 11
Patti Smith and Edgar Winter did particularly well with their relatively high placings considering they were the two tracks that didn't play in this section.

The 3rd theme was carried over from the last Headbang - Notable Absentees. Most of the suggestions were Dave's with a couple thrown in by me to make up a set of 10. Adrian Gurvitz was the one who suffered here with no sound. The voting results were:

Beth Orton She cries your name 56
Van Dyke Parks Heroes and villains 56
Massive Attack Unfinished Sympathy 53
Ryan Adams So alive 52
Divine Comedy National Express 51
Colosseum Take me back to doomsday 45
Van der Graaf Generator Theme One 38
Sufjan Stevens For the widows in paradise For the fatherless in Ypsilanti 35
Adrian Gervitz Classic 28
Starland Vocal Band Afternoon Delight 26
Dead heat between Beth Orton and Van Dyke Parks.

More to follow in the next post.
