Headbang votes - 15 Dec 17 (2)

There had been three significant anniversaries since our last gathering:

  1. Death of Otis Redding - 10 December 1967
  2. Ian Dury's first single with the Blockheads and New Boots and Panties! - 26 August 1977
  3. Release of Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks - 28 October 1977
We played My Girl from the Stax-Volt tour of Europe 50 years ago, followed by Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll, finishing with Holidays in the Sun.

Malcolm missed out on his suggested theme of Keyboard Leads, but we went ahead anyway and played 10 tracks from bands whose predominant instrument is not normally guitars. Voting was once again in place and the results were:

1 Roxy Music Do the strand 68
2 Stranglers No more heroes 64
3 Procul Harum Conquistador 52
4 Deep Purple Child in time 50
5 Zombies Time of the season 45
6 Genesis I know what I like 44
7 Spencer Davis Group I'm a man 41
8 Traffic Feelin' alright 35
9 Doors Back door man 25
10 ELP The Barbarian 16
Yet another example of the variety of opinions was Deep Purple, who had two maximum scores and one minimum.

Another theme carried forward from the last do was Glastonbury 2017, which would run past midnight, so Gary decided it was an appropriate time for him to depart. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the voting started to get a mite ragged at this stage, but the table below is probably a fair representation of what was intended:

1 Radiohead Karma Police 63
2= Biffy Clyro Many of horror 53
2= Foo Fighters Under pressure 53
4 Flaming Lips Space Oddity 50
5 Ed Sheeran Castle on the hill 46
6= Songhoy Blues Bamako 39
6= The xx I dare you 39
8= Chic Get Lucky 32
8= Lorde Royals 32
10 Liam Gallagher (What's the story) Morning glory 29
11 Kris Kristofferson Sunday morning coming down 20
12 Jacksons Wanna be starting something 10
A decisive win for Radiohead, but there was still some polarisation evident, notably with The XX.

The final theme was a very short one - Paisley Buddies, intended as a celebration for the town winning the UK City of Culture. It wasn't to be for Paisley but we went ahead and played 3 tracks from local(ish) artistes:

Paolo Nutini Candy
Gerry Rafferty Night Owl
David Byrne (Talking Heads) Life during wartime
Time for the team photo, taken with a very faint David Byrne in the backdrop:

We thought that was that, but Aidan kindly extended matters a little by offering us all a fine dram:
