Headbang votes - 15 Dec 17

A new venue last night - Aidan's place worked out great and most of us could actually walk home from it too. The technicians and furniture removers had been hard at it in the afternoon to ensure the event went smoothly - and, for once, it did.

Gerry, Dave, Colin, late addition Jeb and I warmed up with a couple of pints in the Douglas beforehand, then we all walked along to Aidan's where our host plus Gary and Andy were waiting. Malcolm had pre-warned us that he would be a late arrival as family were descending on them, but, in the end, everything over-ran and he couldn't make it.

Usual start to the evening with the Obituaries section, where we played 9 tracks, in sequence of their passing:

Walter Becker Reeling in the years
Holger Czukay (Can) I want more
Don Williams Tribute
Grant Hart (Hüsker Dü) Pink turns to blue
Charles Bradley Changes
Jack Good 6-5 Special intro
Tom Petty American Girl
Eamonn Campbell (Dubliners) Dirty Old Town
George Young Friday on my Mind
Antoine "Fats" Domino Blue Monday
Malcolm Young Hell's Bells
Charles Manson Never learn not to love you (Beach Boys)
David Cassidy Tribute
Johnny Hallyday Tribute
The show of hands produced 3 nominations for Most Missed, with the majority going for Tom Petty. Single votes were received for Fats Domino and Walter Becker.

In addition to the above, the following musical notables had recently passed, but we didn't acknowledge them in any way:

Hedley Jones Designed first solid body electric guitar
Murray Lerner Documentary maker - Newport, IoW etc
Harold Pendleton Founder of the Marquee Club - booked the Stones' first gig and established the Reading Festival
Tom Paley Pioneer of the American folk revival renowned for his duets with Woody Guthrie and running into trouble with the McCarthyites. Member of the New Lost City Ramblers who influenced Dylan
Phil Miller Prog rock/jazz guitarist, part of the Canterbury scene
Paul Buckmaster Arranger/Orchestrator - Bowie, Elton etc etc
Dudley Simpson Composer/conductor - incidental music for Dr. Who, Blake's 7 etc
Lil Peep NY rapper
Keith Chegwin "Cheggers"
By tradition, Septuagenarians is the next theme. As many as 24 had achieved this milestone since the last Headbang, but only 9 were deemed worthy of a play. This was the first written vote of the evening and, once again, this demonstrated the eclectic range of tastes of our group. A few yellow cards were waved - and ignored - and these were reflected in some of the votes - but some took completely the opposite view. Here's the results anyway:

1 Eric Bell (Thin Lizzy) Whisky in the jar 62
2= Joe Walsh Life's been good 53
2= Lol Crème The Dean and I 53
4 Don Felder One of these nights 48
5 Meat Loaf Paradise by the dashboard light 43
6 Brian Johnson You shook me all night long 29
7 Dave Pegg The hanging song 27
8 Timothy B Schmit Rose of Cimarron 23
9 Sammy Hagar Bad motor scooter 22
Montrose's lead singer fared worst with 4 of the Headbangers, but one of our group voted Sammy Hagar as his favourite. Conversely, equal second placed Joe Walsh also received the minimum vote from a single Headbanger. One man's meat ......

For the record, the other 15 Septuagenarians who did not merit a play were:

James Pankow Chicago trombonist
Donna Jean Godchaux Singer with Grateful Dead from 1972 to 1979
Bob Catley Lead singer of Magnum
Gerry Conway Drummer for Cat Stevens/Jethro Tull/Fairport Convention
Barbara Dickson
Martin Turner Bass and lead vocals for Wishbone Ash
Sheila Ferguson Lead singer - Three Degrees
Bob Weir Grateful Dead
Glenn Tipton Judas Priest guitar
Peter Noone Herman
Buck Dharma Blue Oyster Cult vocalist, guitarist and songwriter of Don't Fear the Reaper
Clare Torry Vocalist on Great Gig in the Sky
John Wilson Drummer with Them and Taste
Jim Messina Buffalo Springfield/Poco/Loggins & Messina
Ken Sinnaeve Bass - Streetheart/Loverboy
The 3rd theme of the evening was New(ish) Artistes, which had been carried forward from previous sessions, and we played 6 fairly recent live recordings from Jool's Later show:

Jamie T Power over men
Rag 'n' Bone Man Human
Benjamin Booker Right on you
Beth Ditto Fire
Dave Picture Me
Future Islands Cave
The only unanamity here was that they were all good performances - the Headbangers couldn't decide which were the better/best, although Future Islands and Jamie T maybe fared a little better than the others.
