5th Virtual Headbang - 30th September, 2020

It wouldn't be a virtual Headbang without a few technical difficulties, but, by and large, most of us got through last night's session pretty unscathed. Repeated difficulties with internet at Rashenlochy meant Malcolm's presence had again to be brief, and Jeb's internet isn't too strong either but he got by OK - a sterling effort from one who had just emerged from hospital after having his stent removed.

Andy again had sound problems on some of the tracks, as did Dave to a lesser extent.

It was pre-billed to be one of, if not the, most eclectic of Headbangs, featuring at least 8 distinct genres of music - something for everyone, or perhaps nothing for nobody? Anyway, here's how it went, theme by theme:

1) 'GENARIANS

Just 3 tracks were played - 2 septuagenarians followed by 1 octogenarian:

2) OBITUARIES

We played tracks from 5 musicians who had recently passed:

3) ROCK AT THE MOVIES

The name of the game here was to identify which movie the 7 tracks were most associated with - and what were the scenes when the tracks were played?:

We had a quick vote here as to which were the best tracks and it resulted in a draw between the Doors' performance at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival (attended by Malcolm) and the Queen performance at Wembley in 1986 - each gaining favour with 3 Headbangers. The last 3 tracks - Dick Dale, Lynryd Skynryd and Iggy Pop - each gained one vote.

4) GLASTONBURY 50

Celebrating the real 50th anniversary of what eventually became the global event it is today. Starting off with the very first headliners - T. Rex - followed by a short history of the festival, we then played a further 8 epic performances from 1998 to 2017:

Voting here was, unsurprisingly, very divided. Portishead, REM, Neil Young and Radiohead each garnered two votes, with U2 getting one from Steve - mostly because he was there then.

5) NOTABLE ABSENTEES

This could easily also have been billed as the Prog Rock section, featuring 4 acts that have never been played at a Headbang before:

Osibisa got pass marks but there wasn't much love for any of the first 3 tracks.

6) CBGB'S

Another Lost Iconic Venue - the birthplace of New York Punk and New Wave. I had 10 tracks lined up here but time was marching on so I decided to cut it down to just 5 acts who started their careers at the club opened in 1973 by Hilly Kristal in Manhattan's East Village:

This was another close call with Blondie just pipping Talking Heads by 4 votes to 3.

Phil reminded me to take the team photo, but, unbeknown to him - and to everyone else - I had taken a couple of screen shots while the music was being played:

Catching everyone off guard is interesting but it was only fair to balance things up and offer everyone a chance to put on their best face for the final screen grab:
