Headbang results - 18 Aug 17 (1)

Just 7 of us gathered at Steve's on Friday night (after the golf outing) for the second Headbang of 2017. A new venue, but an old problem - technical issues at the start. The usual laptop I use had collapsed so we'd enlisted Gerry's for this occasion, and Gerry, Dave and I had gone over to Steve's the night before for a dummy run, which was successful. On the night, however, the usual gremlins were at work for a while before Dave and Gerry managed to get the sound going.

The slightly later than planned start meant a slight re-schduling of the programme for the evening, but the regular themes were up first, as usual:

  • OBITUARIES. The tracks we played were:

David Axelrod (Producer) The Edge
Brian Matthew 2 intros + final show
Chuck Berry Back in the USA/Memphis Tennessee/Nadine
Clem Curtis (Foundations original singer) Back on my feet again
Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) Black hole sun
J. Geils Centerfold
David Peel Hippie from New York City
Chester Bennington (Linkin Park singer) In the end
Gregg Allmann Melissa
Lonnie Brooks Mojo Hand
Saxa (Saxophonist - The Beat) Too nice to talk to
Bruce Langhorne Tribute
Allan Holdsworth (guitarist/compsoer) Tribute
Joni Sledge (Sister Sledge) Tribute/medley
Glen Campbell Wichita Lineman/Galveston
Anita Pallenberg You got the silver

In addition to the above, the following notables had also passed since the last get-together:

Pete Shotton John Lennon's bestie; his wife was the "pretty nurse selling poppies from a tray"; "Yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dog's eye" from a school nursery rhyme that John couldn't remember the lyrics of
Toby Grafftey-Smith (Jamiroquai keyboards) Artisan cider maker and member of the hunting set
Sylvia Moy (songwriter/producer) Uptight/My Cherie Amour/I was made to love her/This old heart of mine
John F Muir (Producer) John Peel show
Vin Garbutt ("Teeside Troubador") Best live act - Radio 2 Folk Awards 2001
Paul Hollingdale (DJ) Opened Radio 2 in 1967
Ray Phiri (S.A. guitarist) Played on Paul Simon's Graceland

I proposed a shortlist of 4 from the above for the "most missed" vote:
  • Chuck Berry
  • Glen Campbell
  • Gregg Allman
  • Brian Matthew
There were 3 votes each for Chuck and Glen, while Steve opted for Gregg, which gave him the casting vote and he went for Chuck as the Most Missed.

The next session was the traditional second theme - and it was by far the largest ever:
