Headbang votes - 26th July, 2019 (2)

The third theme of the evening was a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the world's most famous music festival. Everyone has seen the film and heard the music on the triple LP, but you can now find some of the performances that didn't feature in either and this was the primary focus here. It was divided in to three sections - Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and afterwards, we ranked the tracks:

WOODSTOCK 50

Band The Weight 74
Melanie Mr Tambourine Man 50
Jimi Hendrix Star spangled banner 50
Santana Evil ways 49
Crosby, Stills & Nash Marrakech Express 43
Joe Cocker Lets go get stoned 39
Johnny Winter Mean town blues 37
Janis Joplin Ball and chain 27
Tim Hardin If I were a carpenter 23
CCR Born on the Bayou 22
Mountain Southbound train 21
Joan Baez Joe Hill 21
Country Joe & the Fish Rock and soul music 15
Canned Heat Boogie - part 1 9
Grateful Dead Mama cried 4
Bert Sommer Jennifer
There were two well-known tracks that we've featured on a number of previous occasions that were not shown this time around, although they did appear on the voting sheet:

Who See me, feel me
Jefferson Airplane White rabbit
The fact that they weren't played didn't stop somebody voting for them!

The other big event of 1969 was the first lunar landing so we featured six tracks:

MOON 50
REM Man on the moon
Neil Young Harvest Moon
Rolling Stones Moonlight mile
CCR Bad moon rising
Police Walking on the moon
David Bowie Moonage daydream
There was a show of hands and the first 3 named tracks each garnered 3 votes, with CCR getting one. Amazingly, Bowie didn't get anyone voting for him - not even the Ziggy freaks in our midst!

The late lamented Perfumed Garden and Top Gear (not the car show!) presenter would have become an octogenarian had he lived, so that became our next theme, as suggested by Jeb:

JOHN PEEL 80

This was always going to be an eclectic selection - some of his favourite artistes are pretty well known but I also researched those artistes who had played the most John Peel Sessions and came up with a total of 13 artistes, which we then voted on:

Nirvana Lithium 102
White Stripes 7 Nation Army 101
Damned New Rose 93
Undertones Get Over You 87
Smiths What difference does it make? 76
Loudon Wainwright III Reciprocity 66
Fall Big New Prinz 62
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band Electricity 59
Wedding Present Nobody's twisting your arm 50
Billy Bragg Milkman of Human Kindness 41
Richard and Linda Thompson/Fairport Convention I want to see the bright lights tonight 40
Tyrannosaurus Rex Sarah Crazy Child 33
Ivor Cutler Shoplifters 10

At this point of the evening, Cinderella Grant made his traditional early departure, just before our final theme so it was time to take the team photo:

GLASTONBURY

With just half an hour to go until the taxi arrived, we had to rush through this section a bit, although we did have just enough time to vote on the 12 acts featured:

Cure Inbetween days 102
Sheryl Crow All I want to do 91
Johnny Marr How soon is now? 70
Christine Heroes 67
Tame Impala Elephant 57
Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real Something real 54
Kurt Vile and the Violators Pretty pimpin 51
Mavis Staples For what it's worth 49
Fontaines D C Boys in the better land 48
Liam Gallagher Columbia 46
Charlatans The only one I know 36
Idles Colossus 35

So that was that. Now to prepare for the next event.
